Description: In the Abu Dhabi Emirate around 10,662 wells are abandoned, which makes 9% of the total amount of wells. Nevertheless, around 57% of these wells are not dangerous. An abandoned dangerous well is defined as followed: - Dug wells: All wells which are disused or backfilled (partially). It is to mention, that disused dug wells which still have riser pipes or pumps installed are safer than the ones without. - Pits: All pits which are disused or backfilled (partially). - Hybrids and others: All wells which are disused or backfilled (partially). -Boreholes: All wells which are disused, because of collapsing. Around 43% of the abandoned wells are according to this definition dangerous and have to be completely backfilled in order to prevent accidents and groundwater contamination.
